DirectQuery vs Vertipaq mode in SSAS Tabular Model

The new and flashy Tabular Model for Analysis Services has been highly pitched with the in-memory (VertiPaq) capability allowing for complex queries to run very fast. This session with some live demo will uncover:
* Advantages and disadvantages of using in-memory cache to store and query data;
* Restrictions on DirectQuery tabular model;
* Hybrid mode utilization;
* Impersonation and Partitioning techniques
Prerequisite:
* Familiarity with basic Tabular Model project creation will be useful, but not mandatory
Julie Koesmarno is an MCITP Database Administrator 2008, MCITP Database Developer 2008 and MCITP Business Intelligence 2008, with a Bachelor degree in Information Technology specialising in Software Development. She has over 8 years commercial experience in SQL Server for large scale and multi-million OLTP and ETL projects as SQL Server Developer and System Analyst/Designer. She is currently working as a Microsoft BI Consultant, delivering SQL Server 2012 Tabular Model solutions. She has presented in a number of SQL Server events such as Sydney SQL User Group, SQL Saturday #138, 24 hours of PASS and PASS Summit 2011 (co-presenting with Victor Isakov).

First Look: Microsoft Data Explorer - ETL for Mere Mortals

In this session, you will get a look at the new Data Explorer tools. There is both a desktop and a cloud version. This toolset is designed for DBAs, SQL Developers and Analysts to perform light-weight extract, transform and load tasks. These tasks can be completed on SQL Server data as well other data sources, such as SharePoint list data, Excel data, text files, as well as RSS feeds, data from cloud data markets, such as Windows Azure Data Market and more. This demo-driven session will get you started with the beta release of Data Explorer. You will understand the what, why, when, where and how that Data Explorer brings to ETL.
Lynn Langit spent 4 years at Microsoft as a Developer Evangelist. Last October, she left Microsoft to rejoin the consulting and training world. Lynn has been working with SQL Server since 6.5 and she has published several books on SQL Server BI. She has also written technical courseware for Microsoft, AppDev and DevelopMentor on SQL Server. Her latest course (for DevelopMentor) is 'Essential SQL Server 2012 for Developers.' Lynn is also working in the world of NoSQL, exploring both Hadoop and MongoDB. Lynn blogs at www.LynnLangit.com. Cube space; the final frontier. In this Star Trek themed introduction to MDX, we will discuss the fundamentals of cube structure and vocabulary,including tuples, members, sets, hierarchies, and more. We will introduce and demonstrate the basic syntax of MDX with queries that include navigating hierarchies and even some time-based expressions. This session will give you the tools you need to write simple, yet meaningful, MDX queries in your own environment.
